PM Surya Ghar Scheme Reaches 50 Lakh Rooftop Solar Installations

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has passed a major milestone, with more than 50 lakh Indian households now using rooftop solar power. Since its launch in February 2024, the initiative has focused on lowering electricity costs through the adoption of renewable energy. Progress has been rapid; in just over two years, 50.06 lakh systems have been installed. This is a sharp rise compared to the 7.94 lakh installations recorded over the previous decade, highlighting a significant shift toward sustainable energy solutions for the public.

This program is rooted in India's broader goals for energy independence and operates with a dedicated budget of ₹75,021 crore. It is designed to make solar technology reachable for a wide range of citizens, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds. Adoption has accelerated recently, reaching a rate of nearly 16,328 households per day by July 2026. That month proved to be the most successful since the program began, with 5.06 lakh new installations recorded in those few weeks alone.

In practice, the rollout of the PM Surya Ghar scheme has required steady cooperation between government agencies, local communities, and solar vendors. A total of ₹28,024 crore has been distributed through direct benefit transfers, helping families cut their monthly utility costs. Currently, nearly 19 lakh households pay nothing for electricity, demonstrating how the program can ease financial pressure on a household level. Beyond the homeowners, the scheme has supported a growing network of registered vendors and trained technicians within the renewable energy sector.

The scheme provides environmental and social benefits alongside these economic gains. By encouraging rooftop solar, it has added over 14.8 GW of capacity to the national grid, aiding the transition to cleaner power sources. There is also a practical advantage for families who generate more power than they use; these households can sell surplus electricity back to the grid. This creates a new source of income for many while strengthening the country's overall energy security.

Looking forward, the PM Surya Ghar scheme is expected to reach even more people as it continues to grow. There are plans to roll out the Utility Led Aggregation model in additional states, specifically to help economically disadvantaged households adopt solar power. The government is also working to refine digital systems to make applications and subsidy payments more efficient. As India works toward its broader renewable energy goals, the scheme remains a central part of the national approach to sustainable development.
