Eswatini Water Project Completes 34,732 Water Connections

The Eswatini Water Supply and Sanitation Access Project has made significant strides in improving access to clean water and sanitation facilities. As the project nears its official close-out, it has successfully delivered 34,732 water connections and 5,394 household sanitation facilities. This initiative, implemented through collaboration among various government institutions and sector partners, aims to enhance the quality of life for communities across Eswatini by providing essential services critical for public health and well-being.

Launched with the support of the World Bank, the project has focused not only on physical infrastructure but also on developing systems for better management of water resources. Through the National Disaster Risk Management Authority, it has supported the creation of 14 municipal drought management plans and established early warning systems to monitor drought conditions. These efforts equip institutions with the necessary tools to assess risks and plan responses to climate-related threats, ensuring long-term water security for the nation.

In addition to household connections, the project has expanded sanitation services in public institutions, providing facilities in 35 schools and four health facilities. Furthermore, the establishment of 19 prepaid-meter water kiosks has improved access to water services for underserved communities. These initiatives foster a healthier environment and promote hygiene practices among residents, particularly in vulnerable areas.

The lessons learned from this project will inform future interventions in water, sanitation, and climate resilience. Stakeholders are currently assessing the effectiveness of the infrastructure and information systems developed through the project, as well as the institutional capacity that has been built. The emphasis on integrating water security with climate preparedness ensures that communities are better equipped to handle droughts and other climate-related challenges.

As the project approaches completion, its achievements provide measurable evidence of the positive impact on water access and sanitation in Eswatini. The collaboration among government entities, local communities, and international partners has been instrumental in driving these results. Moving forward, the insights gained from this project will be vital in shaping future water management strategies and ensuring the sustainability of these essential services for the population.
